Faith Formation is more than religious instruction. The goal is to encourage growth in faith, which implies both formation and transformation, leading one to live out the Gospel as part of a faith community. Religious education is a lifelong process. Everyone, including the teacher and catechist, is always a learner. Faith Formation is an expression of the mission entrusted by Jesus to the Church. Through Faith Formation, the church seeks to prepare its members, old and young, to proclaim the Gospel message and translate it into action.
St. Barbara Parish offers a Religious Education program for children in grades 1-5 and their families. The program consists of three parts:
1. Religious Education classes: These classes meet twice a month with a Catechist using Pflaum’s liturgical-based program. Classes are based on themes gathered from the Sunday lectionary. These classes are meant to be a learning experience, but also an opportunity for the children to gather as Church. We aim for children to feel a sense of belonging within our Church.
2. Adult Faith Formation: While the children are attending Religious Education, parents are encouraged to attend our Adult Faith Formation program. Adult Faith Formation is led by one of our Franciscan priests or a guest speaker. Parents engage in a time of prayer, discussion, learning, reflection, and encouragement. Parents are the primary catechist for children by teaching with their words, example, and life. Our Adult Faith Formation program is meant to help parents cultivate Catholic values and experiences in the home.
3. Children’s Liturgy of the Word (Grades 1-5): St. Barbara Parish offers a Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Children are dismissed before the First Reading and they return during the Prayers of the Faithful. During this time, children hear the Sunday readings from a Children’s Lectionary. After the readings, children participate in a brief homily/conversation about the themes and stories heard. When appropriate, children will engage with a craft or activity pertaining to the readings.

St. Barbara Parish offers a Middle School Ministry (grades 6-8 ) after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. The Middle School Ministry is led by Westmont College students who incorporate fellowship, games, scripture, theology, and more. Youth are encouraged to develop a relationship with Christ and one another.
