As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph I’m reminded of the words of St. Francis and his words about our mission as disciples of Jesus:
“We are spouses when the faithful soul is united by the Holy Spirit to our Lord Jesus Christ. We are brothers and sisters, moreover, when we do the will of His Father Who is in heaven; mothers when we carry Him in our heart and body through love and a pure and sincere conscience; and give Him birth through a holy activity, which must shine before others by example.”
Living out these words is a challenge. Over the last month the parish family here at Mission Santa Barbara was shining with good example, joy, and light. At the same time, for many in the parish family, Advent and Christmas were hard because of the loss of loved ones, and celebrating in their absence, especially for the first time, was not at all easy. Still, as pastor, I was witness to so much outreach, connection, and to so many actions directed toward family members in need.
I invite you to look at the cover of this week’s bulletin. It’s a collage of St. Barbara parish depicting December 2019. For me, a fitting title for it would be: Thank you for being a Holy family!
