Growth in the Desert
Here we are halfway through Lent, and what an intense, unexpected journey it is turning out to be. Three weeks ago, on the First Sunday of Lent, Matthew’s Gospel summoned us to the desert. Today, “sheltering in place” is making that desert very real. It’s territory that challenges us.
It turns out that the desert also opens new horizons for growth. A group of St. Barbara parishioners is forming an outreach team to help build community in this new coronavirus world. The idea is to help us support each other emotionally and spiritually during this time of necessary isolation. Parishioners will be contacted through email or phone. Ideas have surfaced about using video conference calling for praying together; having one to one conversations; and book discussions. The Spirit is moving and making us a stronger caring community.
Along with this letter, I wanted to speak to you personally, so this afternoon with help from Brother Kevin I created a special video message, the first for our new parish YouTube channel. You can watch it here.
Please share with me your thoughts about these outreach plans. And if for any reason you do not want the outreach team to contact you, please let me know.
In his own desert journey, Jesus reminds us that we do not live by bread alone, but by the Word of God that comes to us through other people, scripture, and our experience, especially our prayer. In all of these ways, may the peace of Christ open our hearts!
