Mission Santa Barbara was established on December 4, 1786 and was the 10th of the 21 California Missions founded by the Spanish Franciscans. More than 200 years later, the Mission continues to be the chief cultural and historic landmark in the City of Santa Barbara, and home to a community of Franciscan Friars, a beautiful church with an active parish, a museum, gift shop, cemetery, mausoleum, and 12 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. The Mission’s commanding position and grand proportions, graceful lines and soft colors all reinforce her title as “Queen of the Missions.”
For many, Mission Santa Barbara is a symbol of our cultural heritage. As a vibrant part of the Santa Barbara community, the Mission continues to renew its commitment in the Franciscan tradition to serve our neighbors and to welcome the many communities who visit and gather here.
Mission Santa Barbara raises operating funds through the Serra Gift Shop, Museum tours, and the Historic Mausoleum, yet we rely on the generosity of donors to ensure that the Mission continues to be a place of welcome to all the communities it serves.
