Join a dedicated team of men and women at Old Mission Santa Barbara who volunteer their time to educate visitors about early California history and the Mission Era.

 

As a docent, you will:

  • Learn the past history and living story of Old Mission Santa Barbara
  • Welcome visitors from all over the world to the doors of this historical landmark
  • Conduct regularly scheduled public tours
  • Instruct school children on the importance of the Missions in early California history
  • Guide guests through La Huerta Historic Garden, a living botanical museum of plants native to California and those introduced in early mission days
  • Lead specialized tours on Mission art and architecture
  • Participate in annual events sponsored by the Mission including Fiesta Pequeña, the Christmas Candlelight Vigil, art shows, and anniversary celebrations
  • Enjoy excursions to major exhibitions and places related to California history
  • Increase your knowledge through ongoing educational programs
  • Share in the camaraderie of talented volunteer docents

Prospective docents will complete a seven-week educational program that meets one morning per week, and two mornings in the final week. Upon completion of this training, docents are expected to participate in at least three activities each month and attend a monthly docent meeting. As an Ambassador, you will:

  • Warmly welcome visitors from around the world to the beautiful Mission church as part of a two-person ambassador team
  • Answer questions from guests while safeguarding the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere of the church
  • Participate in annual events sponsored by the Mission including Fiesta Pequeña, the Christmas Candlelight Vigil, art shows, and anniversary celebrations
  • Enjoy excursions to major exhibitions and places related to California history
  • Increase your knowledge through ongoing educational programs
  • Share in the camaraderie of talented volunteer docents

If you enjoy interacting with the public, our Ambassador Program is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of the Old Mission while engaging with people from around the world.
Time commitment is two (2) hours twice a month between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
